How do I find what city I’m in?
To determine your current city using this tool, follow these steps:
- Enable location services: Set the Location services switch to ON.
- Grant location access: When your browser asks, allow this site to use your location.
- View your location: Your position is marked with a blue icon on the map, and your city appears in the City field.

In addition to the city, you’ll see the nearest street address to your position (when available), latitude, longitude, country, state/province, and—where they apply—county and ZIP/postal code.
Can I share my location?
Yes. Click or tap the Share my location button to share your city, nearest street address, latitude, longitude, country, state/province, and—where they apply—county and ZIP/postal code, from a phone or a computer. Keep in mind that this reveals your exact position, not just your city, so share it only with people you trust.
Can I zoom in and out on the map?
Yes. Use the buttons on the map toolbar:
- Zoom in: Click or tap the + button.
- Zoom out: Click or tap the − button.
Can I view the map in full screen?
Yes. Click or tap the View Fullscreen button on the map toolbar.
Location and accuracy
Does the tool use GPS or my IP address?
The tool gets your location from your browser's built-in geolocation feature. On phones, the browser combines GPS, Wi-Fi, and cell towers, which is highly accurate for finding your exact city. Computers usually don't have GPS, so the browser uses nearby Wi-Fi networks or, if Wi-Fi isn't available, your IP address, which can be off by 30 miles (50 km) or more. The tool then sends your coordinates to Nominatim, OpenStreetMap's free address-lookup service, to find your city, address, and other place details.
How accurate is the city detection on this tool?
The tool relies on your browser’s geolocation, which uses GPS on phones and nearby Wi-Fi networks on most computers. On mobile devices with GPS enabled, it’s typically accurate to within about 5 meters (16 feet) outdoors, and less so indoors or near tall buildings. Computers, which usually don’t have GPS, are less precise.
Does this tool work on mobile devices like phones or tablets?
Yes, it works seamlessly on smartphones and tablets. For best results, ensure your device’s location services are enabled in settings, and allow location access when your browser asks. Mobile GPS provides the most precise city and address information, though Wi-Fi-only tablets often have no GPS and are located using nearby Wi-Fi networks instead.
How do I enable location services on my Android phone or iPhone?
On Android: Go to Settings > Location and turn it on. Then long-press your browser’s icon, tap App info > Permissions > Location, allow access, and turn on “Use precise location.”
On iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and turn it on. Tap your browser (Safari is listed as “Safari Websites”), choose “While Using the App,” and turn on Precise Location.
Then reload this page and allow location access when your browser asks.
What happens if I deny location permission in my browser?
If you deny or block location access, your browser won’t share any location with the tool, whether from GPS, Wi-Fi, or cell towers, so the tool can’t find your city. To use it, allow location access for this site in your browser’s settings, then reload the page.
Why does the tool show the wrong city sometimes?
Common reasons include your phone sharing only an approximate location (precise location turned off), weak GPS signal indoors or near tall buildings, being near a city boundary or outside city limits, or using a computer, which is located by Wi-Fi rather than GPS and is less precise. Turn on precise location, refresh the page, or move to an open area for a better GPS signal.
What should I do if the map doesn’t load or show my location?
Try refreshing the page, clearing your browser’s cache, updating your browser, or switching to a different one (like Chrome or Firefox). Also, check your device’s location settings and ensure no ad blockers are interfering with map scripts.
Privacy, coverage, and cost
Is my location data stored or tracked by the website?
No. Your location comes from your browser. When you look up your location or click a point on the map, those coordinates are sent to Nominatim, OpenStreetMap's free address-lookup service, to find the city and address. We don't store your location, and OpenStreetMap's handling of lookups is covered by the OpenStreetMap Foundation's privacy policy. Your location is shared with others only if you use the Share my location button.
Does the tool work worldwide?
Yes, it works anywhere your device can determine its location. It shows your city, state or province, and country, as well as county and ZIP or postal code where they exist. Not every country uses these divisions. In rural or remote areas outside city limits, the tool may show the nearest town or your mailing address city instead.
Can I use this tool offline to find my city?
No. Your phone’s GPS can find your coordinates without internet, but the tool needs a connection to load the map and turn those coordinates into a city name. Once the page has loaded, parts of the map may stay cached for a short time, but finding your city requires an internet connection.
Is this tool free to use, and are there any limitations?
Yes. The tool is completely free, with no sign-up required, and there are no usage limits. How quickly the map loads depends on your browser and internet speed.
