What is a Radius Map Tool?

The radius map tool is a feature that allows you to select a point on the map and draw a circle with that point as its center. The radius map tool on onlinecompass.net displays the radius of the circle you are drawing, free of charge and in real-time. After drawing the circle, by hovering the mouse over the center, the tool provides the radius of the drawn circle, the area of the circle, and the geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) of the circle's center.

If the radius of the drawn circle is less than 1000 meters, the tool shows the radius in meters and miles at the center. If the radius exceeds 1000 meters, it displays the radius in kilometers and miles. The area of the drawn circle is also shown in both square kilometers and square miles.

When Do We Use a Radius Map?

A radius map is used in various situations to define and visualize a circular area around a specific point. Some common uses include:

  • Finding Nearby Places: Radius maps help locate the nearest facilities such as restaurants, hospitals, and gas stations. They are also useful for people looking to rent a house near a particular area, as drawing a radius map helps them understand the proximity of the location they are considering.
  • Tourism: Tourists can use radius maps to find attractions, landmarks, and points of interest within a certain distance from their hotel or current location.
  • Search and Rescue: In emergency situations, such as a plane crash, radius maps help define the search area around the crash site. Based on the last known coordinates of the plane, search teams can create radius zones to systematically cover the surrounding area.
